CLEARWATER - Dozens of people are ignoring a health advisory issued at a popular Bay Area beach.
The sign greets you at the entrance: swimming is not recommended off the Courtney Campbell Causeway.
But that didn't stop dozens from going in Saturday.
"Do you know there is a health advisory out here today?" FOX 13 asked James Lucena, who was swimming with his family at the beach.
"Yes I do," Lucena said, shrugging. "I'm out here anyway. I get sick, I get sick."
And to make sure there's no confusion, Clearwater Police warn you as you drive in.
"He said it's at your own risk. If you want to pay and stay here because the bacteria is high in the water," says Eliette Cintron. She was also there swimming with her family.
Health officials issued the advisory Thursday, saying there were high levels of bacteria in the water.
It could come from storm water or even sewage. Health risks include ear infections, stomach flu and hepatitis A.
It's a price some say they're willing to pay to avoid the holiday crowd.
"I didn't want my son to be in a crowded area. So I figured I'd come here to a secluded spot and enjoy the 4th of July with the rest of the people," said Lucena.
Tests will be run again after the weekend, and results are expected at the end of the week.
Officials advise staying out of the water at least until the new test results are in.
