ST. PETERSBURG - St. Petersburg police are trying to track down a hit and run driver who struck a woman on an electric wheelchair.
Shirley Lavine, 55, was crossing 16th Street South in a marked crosswalk just north of 13th Avenue around 9:45 Monday night when a speeding driver hit her, police said.
Lavine was thrown into the grass on the side of the road and her wheelchair was pushed 170 feet down the road.
Lavine was taken to Bayfront Medical Center in serious condition.
The vehicle, which police describe as light-colored, mid-sized, possibly foreign, with front damage, was last seen heading west on 14th Avenue South. It may also have a Lolyola University license plate.
