ST. PETERSBURG - The two officers killed Monday while serving a warrant on a St. Pete home were identified as 48-year-old Sgt.Tom Baitinger and 39-year-old Jeffrey Yaslowitz.
Police chief Chuck Harmon said both excelled at their jobs and had exemplary careers.
Chief Harmon said Officer Yaslowitz had just finished his shift, but volunteered to go to the scene to assist.
According to Harmon, Sgt. Baitinger had been with the force since 1996 and served in various capacities as a detective, officer and sergeant in different units. He is survived by his wife, Paige.
Harmon described a friendship with Baitinger, saying the two had socialized off-duty. He said Baitinger had suffered a health scare, and that he had gotten to know him and his wife in the midst of that.
Harmon said he spoke to Sgt. Baitinger's wife in the hospital today, and that she wanted to put a message out that Baitinger would have done anything for his fellow officers.
Officer Yaslowitz had been with the department since 1999. Chief Harmon said he worked with a K9 unit, which he "dearly loved." He is survived by his wife, and three children, ages 12, 8 and 5.
Harmon said he did not know Officer Yaslowitz as well, but said he was impressed with his skills as an officer. Harmon noted that Yaslowitz had become a K9 officer, and that there were only 12 of those positions on the St. Petersburg Police force.
Harmon said Yaslowitz "always had a smile on his face," and was willing to do whatever it took to get the job done.
"I consider them friends, and I'm going to miss them," Harmon said.
