Bicyclist killed in Clearwater crash

CLEARWATER - A man riding a bicycle in Clearwater was struck and killed by a van this morning, police said.

The crash happened at Martin Luther King Drive and Lasalle Street around 9:45 a.m.

Willie P. Nelson, 52, was taken to Morton Plant Hospital where he died a short time later, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

Detectives said the bike was equipped with a motorized kit, are trying to determine if that played a role in the crash.

Nelson was not wearing a helmet, police said.

The driver of the van, Lorenzo Hearns, was cited for driving with a suspended or revoked license. But police said Hearns, 47, will not be cited for the crash because he had the right of way.
