ST. PETERSBURG - A pedestrian ran across a street and right into the path of an oncoming police cruiser Saturday afternoon.

St. Petersburg Police say the officer was responding to a service call on 34th Street North and was not operating in emergency mode when he hit the pedestrian. The officer saw the pedestrian and tried to swerve away, but the person was struck and thrown into the driveway of a nearby business.

The pedestrian was taken to Bayfront Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

Police say no charges have been filed but the investigation is ongoing.
