ST. PETERSBURG - Coquina Key Dog Park in St. Petersburg is normally quiet and serene, but on Christmas night, police say it was the scene of a brutal attack.
St. Petersburg police investigators say a 38-year-old woman was severely beaten and left for dead in some mangroves in the bayou. Her cries for help were heard early the next morning.
"Some women in the park heard some moaning sound, and when they investigated they found her in the mangroves offshore and she was calling for help, " said police spokesperson Bill Proffitt.
Investigators say the woman was in such bad shape, she underwent surgery and hasn't been able to talk to detectives.
The only clue detectives have right now is a colorful club wristband found on the woman. They are hoping someone recognizes the wristband and calls police to help them identity where the victim might have been the night of the attack.
"It's really difficult to characterize this crime. It could be someone that she met that night. It could be another friend. It's not real clear yet because we haven't talked to her. It's hard to answer those questions," Proffitt said.
Detective say evidence at the scene showed the woman put up a fight against her attacker at the park, but no one heard anything.
Resident Melissa Hicks brings her kids to the park and can't imagine the violence that occurred feet away from where her kids play.
"It's just surprising to know that happened so close to where I live," Hicks said.
Investigators were able to identity the woman through fingerprints, but now detectives want to know who did this to her and why. They hope a distinctive wrist band may unravel the mystery.
