TAMPA - An inmate at the Orient Road Jail brutally attacked a detention deputy on Monday, the sheriff's office said, but other inmates rushed to the deputy's aid, preventing serious injuries.
According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the detention deputy was working at his desk when inmate Douglas Burden, serving time for drug violations, charged the deputy and put him in a choke hold.
Other inmates nearby saw what was happening and were able to help the deputy who was being strangled. One inmate grabbed the deputy's radio to call for emergency assistance. Additional deputies restrained Burden and removed him from the area.
