BRANDON - Looking at her, Summer Moll seems like any other 6 year old, but she's not. The left side of her head is crushed in, and a giant wound has finally nearly healed after eight surgeries.
It's amazing for a little girl that doctors did not think would make it, after a September 2008 drunk driving crash on the Crosstown.
FHP troopers say Cheryl Riemann was so drunk she ended up driving the wrong way, killing Summer's mom Jennifer O'Boyle, and horribly injuring Summer.
Summer has been through scores of surgeries on her broken legs and arms, the pain of learning to walk again, and skin grafts to close the head wound, leaving her scared and sore.
In two weeks, the courts will finally catch up with Cheryl Riemann, but its unclear whether or not there will be a trial. The law is clear -- 12 years minimum; 21 years maximum. The family is not happy.
"I think if you take a life, you get life, I really do," said Tammy Rosian, Summer's grandmother and caregiver.
She wants the judge and jury to know what's happened to Summer and her family since the crash.
"We have one income now instead of two so now my husband is doing double the work, our marriage is on the rocks because we're having our own problems here now. And my kids, they feel left out because I'm always with Summer. Everything has turned around so drastically in these last two years, I don't think its anything that she could every pay us back for."
And Summer, Rosian says, will keep on paying her whole life. She's a year a half behind learning to write her name, yet she's always anxious for a new mountain to climb -- this fall, its first grade, part time.
"That's going to be a big step for her," said Rosian, "she's not ready for all day school yet."
"I'm just thankful she's here. I don't care how far behind she is, I really don't. I'm happy she's here, that's the best gift I could have right now," she added.
