TAMPA - Police are trying to figure out where bones found off I-75 on came from. Wednesday morning the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner confirmed the bones are human remains.

Yesterday a motorist came across the remains while he was waiting for a tow truck.

Detectives have set up a crime scene and are conducting a death investigation just north of Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. An anthropology professor from the University of South Florida is helping in the investigation.

Shortly after the remains were found yesterday, investigators secured the area. They began clearing brush and removing the bones this morning.

Officers say it’s too early to say who the bones belong to or if they belong to more than one person. They also aren’t sure if the victim or victims were murdered.

Detectives say it could be weeks or even months before the bones can be fully analyzed. They’re looking at all missing persons cases in the area.

Investigators plan on giving a more specific update sometime this afternoon.
