TAMPA - As the New York Yankees celebrate another World Series title, there is no doubt it was owner George Steinbrenner who made the Yankees the success they are today.
But away from the glitz and grandeur of the Big Apple, George Steinbrenner's home away from home is here in Tampa. And his contributions to the city throughout the years are immeasurable.
"George has done a lot more privately that nobody knows about than he has done publically," offered Monsignor Laurence Higgins.
Monsignor Higgins has known Steinbrenner for over 30 years. He says Steinbrenner has a generous heart who isn't afraid to show it.
"He's raised the bar for all of us sort of speak, aim to be the best we can be whatever we do,"
Among his many contributions, the Steinbrenners founded the Silver and Gold Shield foundations, which serve the children of fallen police officers and firefighters.
The family also built an emergency center for children at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa.
And every year the Steinbrenners invite schoolchildren from the all around the Tampa Bay area to a Christmas concert like no other.
Steinbrenner's winning record with Tampa doesn't end there.
"When folks in the community see the Steinbrenners support the Boys and Girls Club, it definitely lends an air of class and elegance," observed Lisa Richardson of the Boys & Girls Club of Tampa Bay.
The Steinbrenner family's generous support of the Boys and Girls Club in Tampa has been going strong every year.
"Their hearts are really with the kids of this community and giving in a big way -- in a way that most don't," Richardson added.
And let's not forget Tampa is home base for the Yankees' spring training. Monsignor Higgins says Steinbrenner has embraced Tampa for over 30 years and it's clear Tampa returns the love.
"He's a man who came to Tampa and conquered Tampa. Tampa loves its George."
