TAMPA - Get ready for some shows in the skies this weekend. The 2010 Airfest is being held at MacDill Airforce Base.
It's a highly anticipated show -- six F/A 18 Hornets flown by none other than the Blue Angels .
Commander Greg McWherter is the Blue Angels Flight Leader.
"You're going to see the ground crews getting the planes ready and the jets take off -- six of us fly together," McWherter said.
Crews at MacDill Airforce Base are gearing up for lots of people and lots of planes at the base for the event.
"We have a variety of military aircraft -- both warbirds and modern aircraft," said Airfest direcftor Lt. Col. Patrick Thompson.
One of the most anticipated features in the show each year is the big finale -- this year, it's being performed by the Navy Blue Angels.
"The demonstrations are composed of two major parts. You've got the solos, where two airplanes do max performance demonstrations with the F/A 18; and then you'll see the diamond, with four planes that fly with me," McWherter said.
The Blue Angels are known for their precision flying, and performing tight maneuvers that make the six appear as one. Those who fly say there's nothing like being up in the air, but they say there is also the thrill down on the ground and seeing all the faces in the crowd.
"You get the adults young and old. They are all excited about what you do. There are very few sad faces at an Air Show because everyone is excited about aviation," McWherter said.
Pilots say this Airfest is also a great way to raise awareness about the U.S. Military and showcase recruitment.
"I love what I do and very proud of my service and the opportunities," McWherter explained.
