WESLEY CHAPEL, Fla. - He's not a firefighter or a paramedic, but he helped save the life of a 15-month-old girl who wandered out of her Pasco County home and into a nearby pond. The toddler appeared to be dead, until a neighbor jumped in to help.

"I rushed out there and wind up breaking the screen latch door to get over there," recounted Wesley Chapel resident Mike Wynperle.

It wasn't exactly how Wynperle had hoped he would meet his neighbors, but the encounter likely saved his neighbor's daughter's life.

"Her lips were blue. She was motionless. She was dead," said Wynperle.

Around 11 a.m. Thursday, Wynperle and his sister-in-law were summoned outside by screams, captured by a 9-1-1 call, from across the pond.

In the call, a man is heard saying, "She drowned out there in the backyard. She drowned. She went to the water."

The man heard in the tape, who identifies himself as the baby's father, called 9-1-1 after little Kayla Chanea somehow wandered out the back door and into the pond. Just as he called 9-1-1, so did Wynperle's sister-in-law.

"Listen to me. A kid just drowned in the pond. We need an ambulance," a woman is heard saying in the second 911 call.

Kayla wasn't breathing. Wynperle says as her family looked on paralyzed by grief, he recalled the CPR training he had been given for a job more than 15 years ago.

"Everything just happened so fast. I didn't even have time to think," explained Wynperle.

As a precaution, his sister-in-law stayed on the phone, relaying directions from the 911 operator, who said to "take two deep breaths and blow in the baby's mouth."

It took the paramedics less than five minutes to arrive at the home. As they were arriving, Wynperle says little Kayla's pulse started to come back. Paramedics then whisked her off to the hospital. The detective on the case said he believes Wynpearl indeed saved 15-month-old Kayla's life.

"It was something else, something to experience actually. Makes you take a new look on life," added Wynperle.

The little girl's family declined an interview. The Pasco County Sheriff's office says at this point , it appears to be a terrible accident and no charges have been filed. Detectives say Kayla is now recovering and was expected to leave St. Joseph's Hospital sometime Friday.
