TAMPA - Police say an 11-year-old girl drowned at a Tampa pool Wednesday afternoon.

It happened around 2 p.m. at the Cyrus Green pool at 2101 East Martin Luther King Blvd.

The girl was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where she died.

According to police, the girl was there as part of a summer program, and knew how to swim. They say she was racing another boy when the boy noticed after a while that she wasn't following, and a lifeguard spotted her at the bottom of the pool.

The lifeguard pulled her out and began performing CPR, and someone called 911.

Police, the lifeguard and paramedics performed CPR for 30 minutes at the pool and in the ambulance.

The girl, 11-year-old Britney Mills of Tampa, was pronounced dead at the hospital. An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death.

The pool has been closed while police investigate.

Police say, though, that the pool had the appropriate number of lifeguards.
