(MYFOX NATIONAL) - State fair season is here, and while the animals and amusement park rides command a healthy dose of attention, most people still get the most excited about the food.
Roasted corn, polish sausages and brisket sandwiches are all on par as "normal" foods. But the ones that tend to get the most attention and interest are the ones that are fried or on a stick.
Here's a look at some of the more unusual foods you can expect to see at your local state fair:
• Spaghetti and Meatball on a Stick
Proving that anything can be fried and put on a stick, the Minnesota State Fair has made spaghetti and meatball on a stick a staple for several years now. The spaghetti is wrapped around the meatball, dipped in batter, fried and served with marinara sauce
• Krispy Kreme Chicken Sandwich
It's exactly how it sounds -- a fried chicken patty topped with Swiss cheese and served between a Krispy Kreme glazed doughnut. It's also served with a side of honey. The sandwich made its debut at the Orange County Fair in California in 2006.
• Deep-Fried Twinkies
Many fair food fans are now familiar with deep-fried Oreos and deep-fried Snickers. But the Twinkie is among the more famous deep-fried pastries. The treat is made by freezing the Twinkie first and then dipping it in batter and frying. After making its first appearance at the Arkansas State Fair , the fried Twinkie is now one of the most popular foods at state fairs nationwide.
• Hot Beef Sundae
It may look like a bowl of beef with whipped cream and a cherry on top. But rest assured -- it's actually not as disgusting as it sounds. Slow-roasted beef is topped with buttery mashed potatoes, cheddar cheese and a cherry tomato.
• Chicken Fried Bacon
Just regular bacon would never cut it as fair food. Chicken fried bacon is bacon strips dipped in batter and fried like chicken fried steak. It was first introduced at a restaurant in Texas and is now a fair favorite. Glen Kusak of south Texas won the Big Tex Choice Award for Best Taste at the 2008 State Fair of Texas in Dallas for his version of the dish.
