Trailer where Jessica Lunsford died burns down

Since February of 2005, not a day has gone by that Ruth Lunsford hasn't thought of her granddaughter.

"Honey, if it had been up to me, I would have given my life to have saved that little girl," she offered.

On February 24, it will have been four years since 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford was taken from the family's Citrus County home. John Couey has been sentenced to death for her murder.

Every day Jessica's family has had a visual reminder of the tragedy practically in their front yard. The trailer Couey lived in -- and held Jessica in -- is just 100 yards away from their front door.

But Monday morning brought a change to this Homosassa community, a community that had prayed for Jessica's safe return and gathered together once that hope had vanished. Sunday night, the trailer that held so many of the horrible memories was destroyed by fire.

Investigators say the call came in around 10:30 Sunday night: the trailer John Couey once lived in was engulfed in flames.

Ruth didn't have to watch the news to find out about it; she watched it all from her front porch.

"First thing I thought of, well this is four years since Jessie, just a few days (short) of being four years. It's finally gone," explains Lunsford.

Officials say there was no power in the unit and no one living there when the fire broke out. They're labeling it suspicious.

Ruth thinks someone was trying to bring her family a little relief.

"Let's just say God took care of it. God said it's time and he took care of it," she added.

Ruth knows her pain will never go away, but at least one painful reminder is now gone.
