TAMPA - Patients in pain often turn to pills, and sometimes they get addicted. But there are ways to overcome the pain without pills.
One procedure is called manipulation under anesthesia, or MUA for short.
An anesthesiologist puts the patient under, and for the next 20 minutes, chiropractors and medical doctors work the problem areas.
The theory is that scar tissue is the culprit causing the pain. When scars stretch, pain fibers activate and muscles tighten, and spasm.
While the patient is under anesthesia, the muscles are so loose that they can be manipulated without resistance.
The procedure isn't for everyone, including cancer and heart patients, and those with severe osteoperosis. It can cost thousands of dollars, but it's sometimes covered by insurance.
