TAMPA - On Super Bowl Sunday, Denny’s promised to hand out free Grand Slam breakfasts today. Now, thousands all over the country are taking advantage of the offer.

The restaurant started handing out the free breakfasts at 6 a.m. In Tampa, the Denny’s at Sruce and Dale Mabry looked more like the student union at USF. Many local college students were the first in line.

“They’re pretty delicious,” said Catherine Hires, who was one of the first people inside Denny’s this morning. “I love them.”

Being the early bird is apparently paying off. Most of the people we spoke to didn’t have to wait for a seat.

“There was no line. We just walked in,” said Allie Viccarrondo.

That will probably not be the case as the day goes on. Denny’s will hand out thousands of free meals today and the restaurant expects there to be a long wait once lunch time rolls around. However, the staff is doing everything they can to serve everyone as fast as they can.

“We work together as a team,” said Denny’s Manager Daniel Beller. “Get them in, get them out and keep people happy.”

The Grand Slam breakfast is one of Denny’s best known and best selling entrees. It features two pancakes, two eggs, two strips of bacon and two sausage links. The restaurant thinks handing out the meal for free will end up paying off in the long run.

“It’s a good idea,” Viccarrondo said. “Like, a lot of people are going to come and get them. People will probably come back because it’s really good.”

Denny's will continue giving away Grand Slams until 2 p.m.  That's when the price goes from free to $5.99.
